Just a few days ago, California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered California’s 40 million residents to shelter in place. The order was put in place so that California could limit the spread of the coronavirus (COVID19) and limit the burden to California’s health care system.
Essential Workers Include Those Working in Pot Shops
On page one of the exemptions for “Critical Infrastructure Workers” includes an exemption for Cannabis Retailers. This is listed under the section for health care workers. At the same time, some police agencies are allowing vape shops to stay open too.
Marijuana Smokers and COVID
Recent information has suggested that marijuana smokers could face significant difficulty if they were to contract COVID. Marijuana smoking is associated with large airway inflammation, increased airway resistance, and lung hyperinflation, and those who smoke marijuana regularly report more symptoms of chronic bronchitis than those who do not smoke. One study found that people who frequently smoke marijuana had more outpatient medical visits for respiratory problems than those who do not smoke. Some case studies have suggested that, because of THC’s immune-suppressing effects, smoking marijuana might increase susceptibility to lung infections, such as pneumonia, in people with immune deficiencies. Smoking marijuana may also reduce the respiratory system’s immune response, increasing the likelihood of the person acquiring respiratory infections, including pneumonia. This would also make marijuana, THC and CBD vapers more susceptible to complications of COVID19.
