Children Hospitalized after Food Bank Gave out THC Candy

According to a report from KUTV, two children were hospitalized after eating candy with concentrated THC in it. The THC edibles came from a Roy, Utah church that received it from a Utah food bank. According to the report, a 5-year-old is in the ICU at Children’s Primary Hospital. According to Roy Police, 5 children ate the candy but only two had to go to the hospital.

The father said his daughter was at the home of her grandmother, who earlier on Friday picked up the food donation and ate what she thought was candy.

THC Candy Was Marked “Nerd Ropes”

Roy Police told KUTV that the THC edible was in a packaged marked “Nerd Ropes”. A similar package found online states that the product has 400 mg of THC. A dosage unit is 10 mg, meaning that there are 40 dosage units per package. According to the report, the church handed out 63 bags containing the THC edibles.

What Parents Can Do

As active drug enforcement officers, we have been coming across THC candy since it was first introduced to the market almost 20 years ago. Many of these products have professional wrapping and mimic commonly seen candy including Snickers, MilkyWay and gummy bears. So what can parents do to ensure that the candy they have isn’t actually a THC candy in disguise? The first question is where did it come from? If it came from a name brand store, you should be OK. If it came from a friend or other source, inspect the package.

The nerd ropes in question have a note on the package that states it has 400 mg of THC in it. It also says “Medicated” above the word Nerds. However, it may not always have that printed on the package. Another is to look at a play on words. I have seen THC candy marked “BudderFinger” instead of “Butterfinger”. Budder is a slang term for concentrated cannabis. If you have any doubt as to the veracity of the product, throw it away.
