Cannabis Use and Fungal Infections

Fungus on cannabis is common, but now we know that cannabis use and fungal infections go hand in hand. Researchers examined a large health insurance claims database and found that people who used marijuana were three and a half times more likely to have a fungal infection than those who did not use the drug in the year they studied, 2016.

Marijuana may contain fungal organisms that can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections in people with compromised immune systems, such as those with cancer, transplanted organs, or HIV infections.

While unable to infer causality, the study adds to emerging evidence of this association with the legalization of both medical and recreational marijuana and increased use of the drug. Officer Safety Recommendations

I have warned repeatedly about the threat marijuana posses to police officers while working grow operations. I personally know of officers that have had serious health effects from being in marijuana grows with fungus present on the plants. It is recommended that officers visiting grow sites wear disposable Tyvek suits, full face respirators and gloves and booties.
